FREE cycling support for adults

A BBR ride event taking place in Margate
The Big Bike Revival offers FREE support to help adults to cycle locally

What is The Big Bike Revival?

The Big Bike Revival funds FREE support and cycling sessions delivered locally by grassroots organisations. These are run by experienced and qualified volunteers, instructors, mechanics, and cyclists who are passionate about helping adults to cycle locally.

Support is friendly, welcoming, and tailored to your needs. Whether you're a complete beginner or getting back on your bike after a break, they’ll listen to your challenges, offer practical advice, and help you progress at your own pace.

All sessions are free to attend and take place in accessible community locations like parks, high streets, or local venues. Group sizes are small and supportive.

Cycling sessions, support and activities include:

  • Learn to ride

    - Start cycling as a complete beginner, join a skills session to improve or return after a number of years.

  • Pick up basic maintenance skills

    - Learn basic repair skills and tips to look after your bike regularly. Sessions might include how to fix a puncture, pump up tyres, lubricate a chain and change brake pads.

  • Get your bike checked

    - Have minor bike repairs done for you, get your bike safety checked and pick up tips on where to access advanced services that won't break the bank.

  • Join a short led ride

    - Explore local routes and learn how to plan the next one. Go at your own pace, build confidence and meet like-minded others.

All activities are led by friendly experts who care about your cycling journey and are happy to answer your questions

I cycle mainly because I'm too impatient to wait for buses and to give myself independence. It also saves me money and I’d rather spend what little I earn on important things other than owning a car for the sake of it

The Big Bike Revival helped me remember how much I enjoyed cycling when I was younger. It has inspired me to get a bike of my own, cycle for car journeys, and improve my eco footprint

The Big Bike Revival FAQs

It’s normal to have questions before attending a Big Bike Revival session. Here are some common ones, with simple answers to help you feel ready to join a session.

Who is The Big Bike Revival for?

The target audience is adults who are either not currently cycling or cycling less frequently, in general  once a month or less. Children can join events but only if accompanied by a participating adult, ideally one child per adult. Adults might for example be keen to learn how to cycle the school run or encourage their family to cycle as an economic and healthy way to travel for local journeys.

Do I need to book in advance?

Some sessions may require booking, especially if spaces are limited. Check the event listing or contact the organiser to confirm.

Can I attend more than one session?

Yes! You're welcome to attend as many sessions as you'd like.

Do I need my own bike?

Some events provide bikes to borrow. Check the event listing or contact the organiser to see what’s available.

What if I don’t have a bike?

No problem. Many sessions offer bikes to borrow or can advise you on how to get one. Check ahead with the organiser to make sure.

Can I bring a bike that isn’t working?

Absolutely. The free basic bike repair session is designed to get your bike road worthy. This service may not be available at every session such as ride and learn-to-ride sessions.

Will someone help me fix my bike?

Our mechanics can help you with basic repairs or show you how to do simple fixes yourself.

Do you provide helmets or other safety gear?

Helmets aren’t mandatory, but some sessions may have them available to borrow. Other safety gear is usually not provided.

I haven’t cycled in years – is that okay?

Definitely. Our sessions are designed for beginners or those returning to cycling.

Can I come if I’ve never learned to ride a bike?

Yes.  Our learn-to-ride sessions are designed to support adults who cannot ride a bike.

What if I already know how to ride a bike?

Great, if you’ve already learned the basics then these sessions can help you build your confidence and skills and get you ready to ride short journeys or on roads.

Will I be in a group with experienced cyclists?

Our group rides are beginner-friendly and paced to suit everyone. You won’t be left behind.

Can I bring a friend or support person?

Do I need to bring any tools or parts?

No. Tools are provided. If a part needs replacing, the mechanic will let you know.
