Free cycling activities in Essex

A community cycling event takes place in a large open plaza with a domed pavilion in the background. People are seated at benches and walking around. In the foreground, two mechanics work on a bicycle under bunting that reads “Big Bike Revival,” with a “Friends of Eaton Park” flag nearby.
From basic bike repairs to beginner-friendly rides, Cycling UK is here to support you at every stage of your cycling journey. We’re working across Essex to deliver free, welcoming sessions that help adults gain confidence and keep their bikes rolling

Meet your local Cycling Development Officer

Ian Small is your local Cycling Development Officer, supporting communities across Essex to unlock the benefits of cycling. He works with local organisations and volunteers to deliver friendly events – whether it’s fixing a puncture, helping you learn to ride, or guiding you on your first group cycle.

Got a question or want to find out what’s happening near you? Ian’s here to help – just drop him a message.

Hello! I’m Ian – and I love cycling in Essex. Cycling here is special because of the incredible variety – from gravel fire-roads and leafy rail trails to lively towns and peaceful villages.

There’s so much to explore, and it’s all surprisingly accessible. But I know that for many people in this region, cycling can feel out of reach.

The rural nature of Essex means some people live far from schools, jobs and shops – and it can seem like a car is essential. That’s where The Big Bike Revival comes in.

Through free sessions delivered by local partners, we’re helping people discover safer, quieter routes, learn new skills and grow in confidence. Whether it’s learning to ride as an adult, fixing up an old bike or joining your first group ride – these small steps can lead to life-changing journeys.

One moment that really sticks with me is watching Sazia from the group Women Together in Brentwood absolutely blossom. She overcame her nerves, learned to ride and now inspires other women in her community to give cycling a go. Moments like that are why I love this work.

If you’ve ever thought, “I wish I could do that” – come along. You absolutely can. And we’ll help you get there.

What people say

Since 2015, thousands of people across Essex have benefited from The Big Bike Revival. Here are two inspiring stories of local women who’ve transformed their lives – and their communities – through cycling.

Helen: Leading the way for women cyclists in Essex

After returning to cycling in her 60s, Helen Rowe has gone from riding solo on an e-bike to founding a thriving women’s cycling club and inspiring dozens of women across Essex to get back in the saddle.

Her remarkable journey – from getting fit in retirement to racing and leading rides – earned her one of Cycling UK’s Real Yellow Jerseys, awarded to everyday champions who are changing lives through cycling.

Watch Helen’s story and see how one woman’s determination has built a movement.

A woman wearing a helmet, scarf, and checked shirt smiles as she confidently cycles along a paved path in a green park, surrounded by trees with autumn foliage.

Sazia: “I used to think I couldn’t do anything – now I can”

When Sazia Choudhury moved to Brentwood, she didn’t know anyone and found herself isolated and struggling with her mental health. “I was just sitting at home, depressed,” she admits.

That changed when she joined a Women Together cycling session through The Big Bike Revival. At first hesitant, she eventually gave it a go – and never looked back.

Supported by Trailnet CIC and inspired by the camaraderie of women from all backgrounds, Sazia learned to ride a bike for the first time in July 2024. “I talk and laugh with people. It’s amazing.”

Since then, she’s gained confidence, started cycling independently, and even received a bike through Essex Pedal Power. She’s now riding further afield, has joined the advanced group and is helping shape the future of women’s cycling in her community.

I’m so grateful. I want it to continue – there are lots of women like me who need help
