What to expect when you attend a free basic bike repair session

Get your bike checked and receive safety advice – for free with The Big Bike Revival

A Fix session (also known as a Dr Bike session) is part of The Big Bike Revival, a national programme from Cycling UK that offers free, friendly cycling support in local communities. Whether your bike’s been gathering dust or just needs a quick tune-up, Fix sessions help you get back on two wheels safely.

What happens at a Fix session?

When you arrive at a free bike repair session, you’ll be greeted by one of the organisers – usually a local community group supported by Cycling UK.

You’ll be asked to sign in and give a few quick details about your bike: what’s not working, when it was last used, or any concerns you have. Don’t worry if you’re not sure – our partners will take it from there.

At your session, an experienced mechanic will:

  • Check your bike for common issues
  • Carry out basic repairs and adjustments
  • Offer tips on looking after your bike
  • Let you know if anything else needs attention

It’s all free – just pop by with your bike, and we’ll do what we can in your 30-minute slot.

What can we fix?

Free bike repair sessions are designed to help with quick, everyday issues. A mechanic will usually be able to:

  • Replace brake cables and pads
  • Index and adjust gears
  • Lubricate the chain and check for wear
  • Pump up tyres and fix punctures
  • Tighten loose parts and perform safety checks

If your bike needs more specialist work, the mechanic will signpost you to affordable local services that can help.

What should you bring?

  • Your bike – no matter what shape it’s in
  • Any spare parts you already have (e.g. brake pads or a chain)
  • Yourself – and any questions you’ve got

You don’t need any tools or cycling experience – we provide everything that’s required.

Who is it for?

Free bike repair sessions are for any adult who wants support with their bike. They’re especially helpful if you:

  • Haven’t ridden in a while
  • Aren’t sure if your bike is safe
  • Are just starting out with cycling
  • Want to save money on transport

You don’t need to be a confident cyclist – The Big Bike Revival is here to help people at all levels feel comfortable and welcome.

Where do sessions happen?

Free bike repair sessions take place in familiar, accessible community spaces – like parks, libraries, town centres or markets – often as part of local events or pop-ups. They’re designed to be easy to attend.

Learn while your bike gets fixed

While your bike is being looked over, you’re welcome to watch, learn and ask questions. Mechanics are happy to explain what they’re doing and give simple tips on how to care for your bike at home.

Many people leave a free bike repair session feeling more confident and empowered – even if they arrived unsure or nervous.

What Fix sessions don’t cover

To keep sessions accessible and efficient, there are a few things that aren’t usually covered:

  • Electric bikes and hydraulic brakes: these need specialist tools and aren’t normally serviced at free basic bike repair sessions.
  • Major or complex repairs: jobs like suspension work, wheel truing or full overhauls will be referred to a professional bike shop.
  • Bike theft prevention: we focus on maintenance – not locks, GPS trackers or security advice.
  • Bike covers: while useful, these aren’t discussed or supplied at Fix sessions.
  • Full servicing: Fix sessions offer quick safety checks and light repairs – they’re not a substitute for a full bike service.

What people say

Since 2015, The Big Bike Revival has helped thousands of bikes get back on the road. These free repair sessions don’t just fix bikes: they restore confidence.

Here are just a couple of stories from people now cycling safely thanks to the support they received.

My colleagues were joking about what a bad condition it was in but the guy fixing it put new brakes on and sorted the gears out. I have been out a few times and I have ridden nearly five miles. It is still brilliant. If anyone else is like me and hasn’t ridden for years but is thinking about doing it again, I would definitely encourage them and just tell them ‘get on their bike’

The mechanic adjusted my saddle height, and checked the brakes, tyres and chain. He also gave me some advice about things I could do to look after my bike which was helpful
