What is e-scooter and e-bike training?

Cycling UK is delivering an exciting new programme, funded by Motability Foundation in partnership with CoMoUK, Lime and Beryl.

The programme supports disabled people and people with long-term health conditions in Greater Manchester to start using shared e-cycles and e-scooters. It offers a fantastic opportunity to learn how to use Lime e-scooters and Starling e-bikes for free.

Our training runs between July and September 2025 and will include:

  • Training on both the Lime app and Starling Bank app.
  • Downloading and setting up the apps to be able to book a ride.
  • Where to find and park the e-scooters and e-bikes.
  • Try the e-scooters and e-bikes and build your confidence in a traffic-free space.
  • Training on where you can ride e-bikes and e-scooters.
  • A led ride with others to experience scooting and cycling.

Shared micro-mobility

Shared micro-mobility means bikes, e-bikes and e-scooters. These are available on the street for short-term hire.

They might be dockless which means they can picked up and left almost anywhere within a special area. These cycles and scooters use GPS and smartphone apps to track and unlock. This makes using these types more flexible and convenient and a better coverage across an area.

Docked shared micro mobility means cycles and scooters must be picked up from and returned to a docking station. Which means the parking is in a fixed place. Having a dock is easier for the bikes to be recharged and means they are parked properly.

Benefits of shared micro-mobility

There are lots of benefits to cycling and active travel. You can read more about it here the case for cycling and health. On-street cycle and scooter hire schemes bring their own unique benefits for you to enjoy including:

  • Ease and accessibility – you can access bikes and scooters without having to own, fix and store them.
  • Environmental benefits – the schemes encourage people to do shorter journeys on bike/scooter to reduce the number of cars on the road. This helps improve air pollution.
  • Traffic Reduction- you can do shorter journeys on bike or scooter which reduces the number of cars on the road and overall congestion.
  • Efficient use of space – dockless and semi-docked systems take up less space than car parks
  • Money Saving –cycling and scooting are cheaper than running a car or getting a taxi especially for short journeys. With pay-as-you-go there is no long-term commitment or monthly fees.
  • Time saving – avoid traffic jams by using bike lanes and alternative routes.
  • Health and lifestyle benefits—Physical activity encourages a healthier and more active lifestyle. It also helps improve mental well-being by reducing stress and improving mood overall.
