Hello! I’m Nadeem, and I love cycling in South Yorkshire – it’s a region packed with character, from the stunning landscapes of the Peak District to the rich industrial history of places like Sheffield and Doncaster. You’ll find everything from quiet greenways to buzzing city routes, and a real sense of community wherever you ride.

The Big Bike Revival helps break down barriers that stop people cycling – whether that’s a lack of confidence, language barriers or simply not knowing what’s available nearby. We make it easy and welcoming, with free events, friendly faces and often bikes and helmets to borrow so everyone can join in.

One story I’ll never forget is of a man who came to a session while experiencing homelessness. He gained the confidence to ride on the road, borrowed a bike to attend a job interview – and got the job. He kept using the loan bike to commute for a month, and after his first pay check, he bought his own. Now he rides to work every day. That’s the kind of real-life impact we see all the time.

These events are open to everyone. They’re a chance to get moving, build confidence, meet new people and feel part of something positive. I’ve seen people reverse health conditions, make lasting friendships and feel truly included – no matter their background. Just turn up – we’ll help you get started.

What people say

Since 2015, thousands of people across South Yorkshire have benefited from The Big Bike Revival. Here are inspiring stories of how cycling has made a difference.

Building confidence through cycling

Local organisation: Waller BMX (Jack Waller pictured)

One of our participants, an autistic adult, joined our Big Bike Revival led ride sessions with understandable hesitation. Social settings were often overwhelming for him, and he found it difficult to connect with others.

The structure of our led rides – predictable yet relaxed – gave him space to ease in at his own pace. As the weeks went by, we saw a transformation. He began engaging with fellow riders, not just during the sessions but also in the moments before and after.

The combination of being outdoors and sharing a common interest in cycling helped lower his anxiety and build trust. Over time, his confidence grew – so much so that he started socialising more comfortably in other areas of his life too.

For this participant, cycling became more than just a physical activity. It became a gateway to greater social connection, showing how The Big Bike Revival can help people find confidence and community in their own way.

Finding strength on two wheels

Local organisation: Yorkshire Bike Shack (pictured)

J joined our weekly Big Bike Revival rides a few months ago. At first, she found them tough – particularly on hills, where she often had to stop and walk. But she kept coming back, spurred on by encouragement from the group and the welcoming Yorkshire Bike Shack team.

With every ride, J’s stamina and technique improved. She can now ride up hills without stopping – something she once thought impossible. More than that, she’s seen real improvements in her health and wellbeing. “I’ve lost weight and feel more confident,” she says.

For J, the rides aren’t just about fitness. They’re a chance to enjoy the countryside, breathe in the fresh air and feel part of something positive.

I’m going to keep coming because I like the sense of accomplishment and the friendly atmosphere

Her story is a great example of how consistent support and community can help people push through barriers and unlock personal growth.
