Community Cycle Clubs in the North-East
From social rides in County Durham to mental-health-focused groups in Newcastle and Gateshead, Community Cycle Clubs in the North-East are rooted in the communities they serve – including young dads, military veterans, older riders and people living with health conditions or disabilities.
They offer welcoming, confidence-building ways to start or return to cycling alongside people who understand your circumstances and what you want from a bike ride.
Meet your Cycling Development Officer for the North-East
Jordan Matthews works with local groups across the North-East to set up and grow Community Cycle Clubs.
He supports community leaders and volunteers with practical help – from planning inclusive routes and training ride leaders, to connecting them with funding, bikes and equipment so they can welcome more people.
From County Durham and Gateshead to Newcastle, North Shields and Hexham, Jordan meets people who care deeply about their neighbourhoods and want to use cycling to improve health, confidence and connection.
His role is to turn that energy into friendly, sustainable clubs so more adults can ride regularly where they live.
Club spotlight: Cycling Minds and Linskill Riders
Two Community Cycle Clubs in the North-East, both recognised in Cycling UK’s Going the Extra Mile Volunteer Awards, show how powerful local cycling can be for confidence, connection and wellbeing.
Cycling Minds
In partnership with The Hextol Foundation, Cycling Minds runs a fully funded programme of supported e-bike rides on the quiet country lanes around Hexham for people with mental health needs and, in some cases, learning differences – groups who might otherwise find it hard to access cycling and its benefits.
E-bikes mean people of different fitness levels can ride together without anyone being left behind, while the rides themselves support better mental and physical health, raise self-esteem and build confidence. The social side is just as important: every ride includes time to chat over a café stop or picnic, helping to reduce isolation and strengthen connections as people explore the countryside by bike.
Linskill Riders
Linskill Riders focuses on people over 50, offering friendly led rides, cycle skills and maintenance sessions to support health and wellbeing.
Many members have gone from barely riding at all to becoming regular cyclists, thanks to patient support from volunteers.
Club spotlight: Wheelie Good Dads – riding the River Tyne together
Wheelie Good Dads is part of North East Young Dads and Lads, using cycling to help young dads build confidence, friendships and time out in nature. In this video, the group take on a big challenge: riding from the mouth of the North Tyne River all the way to its source.
Along the way they talk about more than just hills and miles – from reading the landscape and writing about the journey, to the buzz of tackling tougher terrain together and the simple joy of freewheeling downhill, taking in the views (and the odd fly). It’s a great snapshot of how cycling, conversation and shared challenge come together in this Community Cycle Club.

Meet your Cycling Development Officer for West Yorkshire
Rob Greenland works with local groups across West Yorkshire to set up and grow Community Cycle Clubs.
He supports community leaders and volunteers with hands-on help – from planning inclusive routes and designing beginner-friendly sessions, to connecting clubs with funding, bikes and equipment so they can reach more people.
From Seacroft in Leeds to Elland, Bradford and Halifax, Rob works alongside organisations who want to use cycling to improve health, reduce isolation and bring communities together.
His role is to turn that local passion into sustainable, well-supported clubs so more adults can enjoy regular, everyday cycling where they live.
Club spotlight: St Augustine’s Bike Kitchen, Halifax
St Augustine’s Centre in Halifax works with refugees and people seeking asylum – and its Community Cycle Club uses bikes as a way to move, connect and feel at home in a new place.
Instead of simply giving bikes away, the team now runs a free bike library, offering short-term loans alongside repair workshops and weekly led rides.
This means newcomers can borrow a bike, learn how to look after it and grow their confidence riding in an unfamiliar area, while staff and volunteers get to know them and offer wider support.
“It’s easy to give a bike away but harder to create a regular cyclist who feels part of a community,” says Premises Manager Paul Clarke. The new model is helping them do exactly that, with members returning for rides, maintenance sessions and other activities at the centre.
Supported by our Community Cycle Clubs and Big Bike Revival programmes, St Augustine’s is showing how access to a bike, a bit of know-how and a friendly group can turn free transport into something much bigger.
