Video guide: Five top tips for a safer journey
Here are five essential tips every cyclist should keep in mind to help ensure a safer and more predictable journey.
1. Check your surroundings
Before setting off, always assess your environment. Find a position where you're clearly visible to passing traffic, and only enter the road when it’s safe to do so. If you're emerging from a hidden or obscured location, wait for a large, safe gap in traffic before joining.
2. Brake sense
Stay alert to changing road conditions and make sure you can easily access your brakes. Be familiar with how your brakes respond and understand that wet or uneven surfaces can significantly increase your stopping distance. Having reliable braking awareness is vital for quick reactions.
3. Observe and anticipate
Maximise your awareness while cycling. Make eye contact with drivers before performing manoeuvres - this helps confirm they’ve seen you and can anticipate your movements. Always watch for road users who may not be paying attention and take early steps to avoid potential conflicts.
4. Road positioning
Maintain a riding position that is at least an arm’s length away from the kerb. Most road defects like potholes, debris or drain covers tend to be near the edge of the road, so riding further out can help you avoid them. At pinch points, where the road narrows, consider taking the centre of the lane to make yourself more visible and prevent unsafe overtaking by drivers.
5. Finishing your journey
As you come to the end of your journey, be predictable in your movements. Check over your shoulder to signal your intention to other road users. Gradually move towards the kerb and slow to a gentle stop before dismounting.
