Children gain confidence through Play Together on Pedals at Glasgow nursery
Children at Benview Early Years nursery in Glasgow are gaining confidence, resilience and vital cycling skills thanks to support from Cycling UK’s Play Together on Pedals programme.
The initiative, made possible by Play on Pedals training and a Cycling UK Cycle Access Fund grant, has enabled the nursery to introduce structured cycling experiences for young children, helping them develop balance, coordination and self-belief while reinforcing important road safety messages.
Nikki Bird, Child Development Team Leader, explained that the programme was a natural fit for Benview Early Years, which already takes part in annual road safety activities.
“We were interested in working with Cycling UK because the programme supports children in building confidence and practical bike skills,” they said. “It aligns perfectly with our existing learning around road safety and gives children a chance to experience those messages in a hands-on, engaging way.”
Significant differences
Before receiving the grant, access to appropriate cycling equipment was limited. The funding has since allowed the nursery to provide suitable bikes for children, while also supporting staff development.
“The funding has made a significant difference,” the representative said. “We can now offer cycling equipment that wasn’t previously available, and staff feel confident and skilled enough to deliver cycling sessions themselves. Cycling is now fully embedded in our learning experiences.”
Staff have noticed clear benefits for the children taking part. Many have shown improvements in physical skills such as balance and coordination, alongside increased confidence and determination.

“Children are more willing to try, even when they find something challenging,” the nursery explained. “That resilience is just as important as the physical development, as it builds self-esteem and a real sense of achievement.”
One child, who was initially hesitant to take part, is now riding independently after regular practice, proudly showing others what they can do.
More interest in cycling
Beyond individual progress, the programme has sparked wider interest in cycling throughout the nursery. Children are increasingly confident talking about cycling and sharing their experiences with their peers, while staff feel better equipped to promote active travel as part of everyday learning.
Looking ahead, Benview Early Years plans to continue offering cycling sessions to all children and hopes to involve parents more closely, encouraging families to support cycling at home and take part in shared activities.
The nursery praised the support provided through the programme, describing the process as smooth and well communicated.
“We felt fully supported at every stage, which made implementing the programme easy and enjoyable,” the representative said.
The Play Together on Pedals programme continues to demonstrate how early-years cycling initiatives can play a key role in children’s physical development, confidence and long-term wellbeing.
Play Together on Pedals receives funding from a Scottish government People and Place grant, administered and supported in Glasgow by Strathclyde Partnership for Transport.
