Bike lending at Kildrum gives every child the chance to ride
Thanks to support from Cycling UK and SPT, the nursery has been able to expand its programme and make cycling more accessible for all families.
With the help of grant funding, Kildrum purchased two fleets of lightweight, high-quality bikes. One set is used during nursery sessions to run Play Together on Pedals activities, while the second fleet is lent out so children can continue practising at home.
This simple addition has transformed the way children move from balance to pedal bikes. Previously, families were directed to upcycled bikes, which were often heavier and harder to ride. Now, children can borrow familiar bikes that make the transition smoother and far less daunting.
The benefits go beyond balance and pedalling. Staff have noticed children improving their listening, resilience and physical skills.
They’ve also developed early awareness of safety, proudly carrying out the ‘wobble test’ on their helmets and explaining why it matters to wear one. Practising in the nursery car park, many are beginning to recognise the dangers of traffic and talk about “cars on the road”.
One child in particular has stood out, finding the bikes a real source of inspiration and motivation.
Staff describe how riding helped him follow instructions, take part in small groups and grow in confidence. “He shows a particular interest in our new bikes,” says Nursery Practitioner Joan Jensen. “This opportunity has given him an experience that really inspires him.”
The scheme has also created new opportunities for families. Parents facing financial hardship can borrow bikes for their children, and workshops have helped more families engage with cycling. Staff have taken part in training too, ensuring Play Together on Pedals will remain sustainable in the nursery for years to come.
Joan is delighted with how far the centre has come:
The support, knowledge and expertise of Cycling UK has given me the confidence to deliver the bike lending scheme successfully. Seeing examples from other nurseries has been really helpful too, and we’re delighted with the impact Play Together on Pedals is having on our children and families
With plenty of cycle paths and green spaces around Kildrum, the nursery is well placed to keep cycling central to everyday life. From a smoother start in the saddle to stronger family connections, Play Together on Pedals is helping children take their first rides into a happier, healthier, and greener future.
