4. Draft Safeguarding Policy

This draft policy is active now and applies to all members, volunteers, ride leaders, and participants in Bitton and Oldland Cycling Club activities whether in-person or online.

Bitton and Oldland Cycling Club Draft Safeguarding Policy

1. Our Commitment to a Safe Sanctuary Bitton and Oldland Cycling Club is dedicated to ensuring that cycling is a collective, joyous, and supportive experience for all. We believe that every member has the right to enjoy our "Bimbles" in an environment free from harm, bullying, or exclusion. Our "North Star" is the wellbeing of our community, and we use cycling as a tool to boost mental health and reduce loneliness in a safe, respectful space.

2. The "8 to 80" Safety Metric We follow the principle that our club activities and local infrastructure should be safe enough for an 8-year-old and an 80-year-old to navigate with confidence. This inclusive standard applies to our safeguarding efforts, ensuring that our most vulnerable members are always protected and supported.

3. The Safeguarding Power of the "No-Drop" Policy Our strict "No-Drop" promise is more than a ride rule; it is a fundamental safeguarding measure. By ensuring that no rider is ever left behind and that the group stays together at an accessible pace, we reduce the risk of isolation or mechanical distress on the road.

4. Code of Conduct and Respect

  • Inclusivity: We welcome all riders regardless of their background, equipment, or skill level.
  • Respectful Behavior: Members must model respectful behavior toward fellow riders and all other road and path users.
  • Collective Responsibility: Following our 1909 heritage, we maintain institutional maturity by requiring bells for audible warning and well-fitting helmets for the safety of the entire community.

5. Reporting and Interim Management Bitton and Oldland Cycling Club adheres to the national safeguarding policies and best practices set by Cycling UK.

  • Current Safeguarding Lead: We are currently in the process of appointing a dedicated Safeguarding Officer (formerly Welfare Officer).
  • Interim Contact: Until this appointment is finalized, the Club Chairperson (Guardian of the Ethos) serves as the primary contact for any safeguarding concerns or complaints.
  • Confidentiality: All concerns will be treated with the utmost sensitivity and resolved in line with the club’s commitment to fairness and member wellbeing.

6. Implementation The committee shares the responsibility for overseeing the group's wellbeing and ensuring that all ride leaders are registered and follow our safety protocols. We encourage any member who feels unsupported or sees behavior that contradicts our values of friendship and kindness to speak up immediately.
