Townhill Country Park

Group ride

Event description

Sunday’s ride is to Townhill country park in Fife where we can have our picnic lunch by the loch to watch the water-skiers.  There are toilets and picnic tables.  If the weather is poor, we can go to the café.

Our route (37 miles) will be extremely varied.  Bridge crossing, quiet roads, parks and urban cycle paths in the morning, then rural tracks with open views and whizzy downhills in the afternoon.  Do check the photos of the afternoon tracks below, so you know what to expect.

We meet on the cycle path on Roseburn Bridge where it crosses the main Corstorphine road at 9.50 am for prompt departure at 10 am.  We will head over the bridge and have a toilet stop at the Park and Ride on the north side of the bridge. We will continue through Inverkeithing, Rosyth, and Pitreavie, crossing Rex park and zig-zagging through Dunfermline park.  We will avoid the very steep road to Townhill by taking an easier gradient behind the hospital to join a cycle path which will take us to our lunch destination. 18 miles

After lunch we will enjoy rural tracks to Kingseat with views of Loch Fitty and then a further track along Netherbeath to Crossgates.  Now it’s downhill all the way to Hillend and back to Inverkeithing and across the bridge. Lots of possibilities for an optional coffee in the afternoon!  We will take a different route from our outward one from the bridge back to Cramond where the ride will officially finish. 37 miles.  It’s another 4 miles for those who are going back to Roseburn.  See link below.

Weather forecast for Sunday at present looks good. Fair with sunny intervals and temperatures about 11 degrees at lunchtime.

Riding in a group requires consideration for others in the group. Our riding guidelines are essential reading prior to coming out on the ride to ensure safety for yourself and the other riders.  https://www.cyclinguk.org/group/page/guidelines-safe-riding

Please ride in groups of around 6 with football pitch sized gaps between and at any turns, make sure the person behind sees you or stop till they catch you up..  Please take note of my phone number 07974113737 in case you get separated from the group.

Please ensure your bike is roadworthy, and that you carry 2 spare inner tubes and basic tools to change.

In accordance with good riding practice you should carry emergency contact details both on your person (card in wallet/purse, ICE on mobile) and in your bike bag.

While experienced group members will always give assistance and advice to other riders ultimately you are responsible for yourself and making your own way home.  An attendance sheet will be completed on the morning.  The ride is primarily for Cycling UK members.  Non-members are very welcome but would be expected to join Cycling UK after 3 rides.

Looking forward to seeing you on Sunday,

Janet.
