50 miles in 4 hrs 2023

Event ride

Event description

The 50 in 4 started in 1967 and has been every year since then on the 6th Sunday of the year, except when the weather has meant it has to be cancelled as it is a winter ride over part of the N York Moors. It grew out of a regular club run by the CTC Hard riders’ group.  It was then decided to make it a reliability trial for any experienced riders from cycling clubs.  The event is not widely publicised as only experienced club riders (and any companions they want to bring along, assist  and supervise) are sought  due to its challenging nature.

In 2020 the event had to be cancelled due to heavy snow and in 2021 it was cancelled due to the pandemic.   In 2022 there was a successful event with 25 entries.

The route starts at Marton shops TS7 8DX (w3w: swept.amber.animal )and goes via Bilsdale, Helmsley, Sutton Bank, Thirsk, Northallerton and finishes at Brompton at a bus stop near St Thomas’s  Church DL6 2RD (w3w hint.brought.attending ) on Northallerton road.   The organisers have put forward a suggested route and it is up to each rider to tackle it in accordance with their wishes.  The suggested route has 4 major climbs and 4 major descents with around a 2,800 ft gain and 2,800 ft loss if the suggested general route is followed and all entrants should ensure that they can average 12.5mph on a course of this nature.

Entry is on the day from 8.30 am at Marton Shops with no registration before then with a 09.00 start although riders may leave from 08.50 onwards to avoid a mass start.  All riders must complete a short registration form and give a fee of £1 to an official before starting.  IT WOULD HELP IF YOU COULD PRINT OFF AND BRING THE REGISTRATION SHEET TO REGISTRATION with £1 but we will allow entries on the day as well using the same registration sheet.  Cash only £1 (we don’t want to give change) no cards please.

No electric bikes are allowed.  Any under 18s entering must be accompanied by an adult over 18 who will ride with them at all times.

All ride completers will be registered at Brompton at the bus stop on Northallerton road.  The finish will have an official there until 13.30 when any registered rider who has not been entered as having completed will be contacted.  So please please ring the official number to let us know if you have dropped out.  If we can’t contact you we will then ring the number of the person you have nominated as your Emergency contact.  Please note that as a reliability run the route is unsupported (recovery; first aid) as is the case our club runs.

We hope everyone taking part has an enjoyable and challenging day
