Women’s cycling advice
‘My ride. Our right’ – because women deserve the freedom to move
Women make half as many trips by bike as men, and are more likely to be put off cycling by a fear of busy traffic. That’s why we launched our ‘My ride. Our right’ campaign – because cycling should feel safe and welcoming for all.
With your help, we are lobbying politicians for cycling routes designed with women in mind and organising mass protest rides around the country to highlight the need for safer streets.
Everything you need to know about … women’s cycling
From cycling on your period, during pregnancy and menopause, to experiencing street harassment while on the bike, there are some matters that relate to women cyclists.
If you need advice on choosing the right bike to ensure maximum comfort, finding safe, quiet routes that are enjoyable to ride even after dark, or how to connect with other female cyclists, here you’ll find everything you need to continue your cycling journey.
Learn why you shouldn’t wear undies with padded shorts, how to get a comfortable saddle and how using chamois cream can prevent chafing. We also cover women’s-specific health and hygiene issues, such as cycling and your menstrual cycle.

100 Women in Cycling
Launched in 2017 in response to the gender imbalance in cycling, Cycling UK’s 100 Women in Cycling annual award recognises the UK’s most inspirational women in cycling – from mountain bikers and endurance cyclists to community group leaders, cycling school-run mums and industry entrepreneurs.
Far fewer women than men cycle and we want to recognise and celebrate the contributions of women who promote and encourage cycling – helping to redress that imbalance. Every year, our 100 Women are making cycling more accessible and inclusive to all and shaping the future of cycling.
