What is Cycle Friendly Places?

Cycle Friendly Places is a new accreditation programme developed by Cycling UK, equipping hospitality and accommodation businesses in Cornwall, Kent and Norfolk with new skills, resources and knowledge to broaden their appeal to cycle tourists. Accredited businesses will enjoy exclusive benefits including:

  • a free equipment bundle (such as tools, a pump, locks and First Aid kit)*
  • training in digital marketing, cycle maintenance and route knowledge
  • promotion through Cycling UK’s Cyclists Welcome directory of places to stay and eat for anyone planning a cycle trip.

Accreditation is completely free of charge thanks to co-funding from the European Regional Development Fund via the EXPERIENCE project

A guide to becoming a Cycle Friendly Place 

Accreditation Criteria

To be eligible to become a Cycle Friendly Place, Accommodation businesses (hotels, b&bs, camp sites, hostels, bunkbarns) and Hospitality businesses (pubs, cafes, tearooms restaurants) must meet all of the essential and three of the desired criteria in their designated category.

Essential criteria
  • Secure bike storage
  • A room or an area for drying clothes, rucksacks, panniers and footwear
  • Provide details for the nearest cycle shop, cycle hire, or specialist
  • Knowledge of local cycle routes
  • Display on your website how to reach your business by bike and/or public transport
  • Free water bottle refills
  • First Aid kit available for visitors own use and details for local hospital, GP surgery, or emergency number*

*Essential for Accommodation businesses only

Desired criteria
  • A bicycle pump, puncture repair kit and tools available to borrow
  • Early morning/late evening food options available or self-catering available 
  • Takeaway lunch option
  • Secure bike locks for customer use
  • Clothes washing facilities or information for nearby launderette
  • Knowledge of, local visitor attractions and/or other Cycle Friendly businesses around your area
  • Bike wash
  • Electric charging facilities available for use
  • Discounts or other incentives for anyone arriving by bike, public transport or cycling during their stay
  • Accommodating group visits from cyclists, such as cycling clubs*
  • First Aid kit available for visitors own use and details for local hospital, GP surgery, or emergency number*

By applying to the programme, you also agree to the terms and conditions

We will review the application and a member of our team will get in touch with you. Once accredited, the accreditation last for 2 years, during which you can enjoy many  benefits and promotional opportunities.
