Sally Watson-Jones works with local organisations across Birmingham to set up and grow Community Cycle Clubs.
She supports community leaders and volunteers with practical help – from planning inclusive routes and designing beginner-friendly sessions, to connecting clubs with funding, bikes and equipment so they can welcome more people.
From Lozells, Handsworth and Small Heath to Sutton Coldfield, Edgbaston and the city centre, Sally partners with groups who want to use cycling to improve health, build confidence and bring neighbours together.
Her role is to turn that local energy into welcoming, sustainable clubs so more adults in Birmingham can enjoy regular, everyday cycling where they live.
Leader spotlight: Sam Sahdra – from new learner to leading two Community Cycle Clubs
When Sam Sahdra first thought about cycling, her grandchildren told her she was too old to learn.
At 61, she turned up nervously to a Learn to Ride session in Handsworth Park, asked for help and, with patient support, went from wobbles to riding confidently in just five sessions. “Coming to the group felt like a family,” she says.
That experience inspired her to help other women feel the same. What began with Handsworth Ladies has grown into two separate Community Cycle Clubs: Hamstead Pavilion CCC and Handsworth CCC, both offering welcoming, leisure-focused rides for people who wouldn’t usually cycle on their own.
Sam and the volunteer team keep the emphasis on confidence and inclusion: small groups, no one left behind, slower riders at the front and faster riders at the back so everyone stays together.
Many riders are new learners or returning to cycling after years away, and gradually build up to riding on the road, finding their place in traffic and discovering new local routes.
I love cycling and I love taking people riding. You can see how it changes lives for the better

Club spotlight: How Pendeford Bike Hub helped Jason
Jason, a photographer from Wolverhampton, joined the Pendeford Community Bike Hub in 2023 to improve his fitness and explore his local area.
Run by Pendeford Seventh Day Adventist Church, the hub offers more than just cycling – it’s a welcoming space promoting health, sustainability and connection.
After years of on-and-off cycling, Jason found renewed motivation through the hub’s sessions. With support from hub lead Calvin, Jason began cycling more regularly and confidently.
I gained more confidence every time I went to the bike hub … Over time, I overcame that fear and found myself enjoying the freedom cycling gave me
