Bike Week Cycling to Work

Bike Week 2023

Your health, your climate, your pocket and your community are all better by bike. Take part in Bike Week from 5-11 June 2023
Bike Week 2023

This year Bike Week is all about cycling to work, and we want to encourage as many people as possible to get out there and enjoy their community by bike. We want you to dream big and imagine how your community could be improved if everyone in it used their bikes more, together we can make a better world by bike.

These last few years have seen a lot of change, many people took up cycling or rediscovered it, dusting off that old bike sitting in the shed to get out there again. Some for exercise, some for commuting to work, to go to the shops or even just to be able to see friends and family. The bike can give everyone freedom, freedom to choose how to travel and how to live their lives better and healthier.

So this Bike Week, from 5-11 June, let’s really celebrate cycling. It’s our chance to all come together and tell the UK that cycling is the answer, the answer to many questions – how can I help myself, my community, my county and my planet.

The facts
  1.  Cycling to work can mean you have a 45% lower risk of developing cancer, and a 46% lower risk of cardiovascular disease – your health; better by bike
  2.  A switch of one journey per day reduces a person’s carbon footprint by approximately 0.5 tonnes over a year – your climate: better by bike
  3.  If all cycle journeys increased from the current level of 2% to 25% by 2050, the collective benefit would be £248bn – your pocket: better by bike
  4. By donating to Cycling UK this #BikeWeekUK it means we can continue speaking up for cycling as we want to ensure wherever you live, it’s better by bike
Encourage your community to cycle

Imagine how your community could look if everyone cycled, how much quieter it could be, how much cleaner it could be, how much happier people could be. There are things you can do to make this a reality.

Of course there is the bigger picture of fundamental changes that campaigning and lobbying can make, and with elections round the corner you can help to support the case for cycling infrastructure or set up a local campaigning group; our Cycle Advocacy Network is there to support you to speak up for cycling.

Or how about this Bike Week you engage with your local community? Encourage friends and neighbours to get out and explore the area by bike. Encourage them to swap their commute or trip to the shop that they would normally do by car or bus to do it by bike. How about getting all the family out on a ride together – you could explore some paths less travelled and see where that bridleway leads or what’s over that hill. If you do then please share your photos with us using the hashtag #BikeWeekUK.
