Over 10,000 tell the Government to support Cycling UK's Cycle safety: make it simple campaign

A huge response to the campaign sends a clear message to the Government: take action on cycle safety now!

With the Department for Transport’s Cycling and Walking Investment Strategy safety review closing at midnight tonight, Cycling UK is delighted to report that, at the time of writing, more than 10,000 people have now written to the Government to voice their support for our recommendations, which are summarised in our Cycle safety: make it simple report.

The recommendations cover all aspects of cycle safety, taking a ‘safe systems’ approach which aspires to eliminate road casualties altogether, by progressively eliminating all possible sources of risk, focussing on:

  • Safe roads and junction
  • Safe road users
  • Safe speeds
  • Safe vehicles
  • Safe systems management (covering funding, road casualty targets and access to justice).

Cycling UK wants to extend a huge "thank you" to everyone who took part in our campaign action, and shared the message amongst their friends, families and communities. We couldn’t have managed it without your help.

Of course, while the call for evidence is now closing, the campaign for cycle safety continues: Cycling UK will continue its work lobbying the Government to ensure that as many of our recommendations are implemented as possible, and that they are implemented effectively so as to maximise the development of more and safer cycling.

Duncan Dollimore, Head of Campaigns and Advocacy at Cycling UK said: “The fact that so many people have responded in support of Cycling UK’s proposals sends a clear message to the Government that significant action needs to be taken to make cycling safer. This will, in turn, encourage more people to cycle and benefit the nation as a whole.

"In his call for evidence, Roads Minister Jesse Norman stated that the ambition of the review was to make cycling the natural mode of transport even for a 12 year old. Cycling UK’s recommendations offer solutions which are simple to implement but would have a significant impact on cycle safety, helping turn that objective into a reality.

"A huge thank you to everyone who has taken part in the campaign."

While the consultation closes at midnight on Friday 01 June, Cycling UK is encouraging people to still write to their MP to seek their support in making our roads safer for everyone.

Cycling UK's submission to the Department for Transport is available online.
