Going places by bike

CTC Derby and Burton is made up of two groups who both organise their own independent ride programs along with joint ventures.  The modern CTC evolved from The Cyclist’ Touring Club and although some of the aims and objectives have changed over the decades, the purpose of our rides remains the same – simply to ride somewhere interesting, on pleasant routes, in good company, with a cafe stop or two.  Speeds vary depending on several factors, to give some idea the riding average is usually between 10 – 14 mph, the rides are social and keep together whatever the speed.  Most rides are on road or well surfaced tracks, those that aren’t will say so in the program.  Our members ride a wide variety of bikes, if it’s comfortable and roadworthy, it’s suitable for our rides.  As part of Cycling UK, all members are welcome on any of our rides.  None members are also very welcome to come along on a few rides to see if they’d like to join

Information about the group rides

Our regular rides includes:

Weekend rides – The traditional Sunday rides from both Derby and Burton-on-Trent. These range from all day mile munchers to a gentle pootle around local landmarks.

Weekday rides – Our long established Thursday rides are a midweek alternative to the Sunday run, with as varied a program.  A more recent addition are the Tuesday Wayfarers, a few less miles but never failing to find something new and interesting.

Summer Evenings – On Tuesday evenings from Derby we have our shortest ride of the week, an ideal taster to riding with the club, but also a chance for regulars to get out for some summer sunshine.  The Derby and Burton groups also arrange some summer evening pub rides or meet ups.

Along with our usual program:

We have a long established Best All Rounder (BAR) competition. Where points are accumulated throughout the year for events as varied as the photo competition to a competitive hill climb.

Each group also nominates a ride as a Classic, these count towards the BAR and are sure to be as the name suggests, classic!

In recent years we’ve arranged a Challenge ride for late summer, something to build up to over the year, for both old and new members.  Our most recent was the 100 mile Coach to Coast series.

Postponed from this year, next year’s Challenge Ride will be a Derbyshire End to End

CTC Derby & Burton have a long history of organising Audax rides, see our program or the Audax UK calendar for details.

Short cycling holidays and tours are also arranged for the groups. From YHA weekends to cross country routes, with occasional trips overseas.

We have produced a club magazine, Awheel, since the 1930's, some examples from over the decades can be found on the Archive page of our website.

Please do take a look at our rides calendar to find a ride that suits you and contact us if you have any questions.  We look forward to riding with you soon.
