Cycling UK Louth’s Easter Sunday Ride to Waltham 31st March 2024

Having enjoyed a fine true Spring like day on Saturday, today’s forecast wasn’t inspiring with fog lifting to low cloud and a chilly easterly wind. However, a large turnout was a pleasant surprise at Louth’s Leisure Centre, everyone remembering to change clocks and arrive in time for a 09.30 am departure.

Joining today’s Ride Leader Tim Newbery were Paul Linder, Martin Wood (glad you could get the time off Martin), Alan Hockham, Sven Livesey, John Rickett and a special guest appearance from Cycling UK Lincoln’s Andy Townhill. Good to have your company, Andy. Chris Owen had indicated he’d meet up with us at Waltham.

On departure, the fog cleared and skies brightened affording us some welcome sunshine. Unexpected but a nice surprise. The rapeseed fields near Double Tunnel Bridge continue to turn a vivid shade of yellow and no doubt will be affecting hay fever sufferers before long.

Continuing into Tetney, low cloud rolled in again and we wondered how many had flocked to the beaches of Cleethorpes to enjoy the freshening onshore breeze. Today, we’d forgo the bucket and spade and instead head inland to Waltham to take refreshment at the Blue Dragonfly Tea Room.

Within a few minutes Chris joined the pre-assembled group on his £30 new acquisition and then a chance for a good old natter. Chris informed us of the re-opening of a tea room at Waltham Windmill, formerly Cuzzlewit’s 1940’s Tea Room. Chris is going to check it out and its certainly one for another time.

Chris would join us all the way to Tetney Lock where he’d then head for home whilst the remainder were enjoying an increasingly helpful wind and sunnier skies once more. Our route would take us through Grainthorpe and Alvingham where we’d bid Paul, John and Alan farewell.

Crossing over the Louth Navigation at Ticklepenny Lock, Keddington (we’d previously crossed the canal at Tetney Lock and Fen Bridge) it was a straightforward journey back into Louth. Wind assisted with temperatures now up to 9 Degrees Celsius.

38 miles for the Louth contingent. Thanks to all for the company.
HAPPY EASTER.
