Aldi Car Park Planning Application

The path alongside the existing Aldi carpark

Aldi have applied for planning permission to extend their carpark at the store on Fairlands Way.

The existing path that runs between the existing Aldi car park and smaller carpark that is accessed direct from Ditchmore Lane will be removed. This is a well-used cycle route link to the Old Town and to Aldi cycle parking.

A new path will be built that goes across the new car park in line with the underpass under Fairlands Way that links to the Town Centre.  Some parts of the application refer to this being a pedestrian / cycle route but the actual plans for the new layout indicate that there will be signs telling cyclists to dismount at both ends of this path. This north south route through the carpark will have a junction with a pedestrian path and a vehicle route.

Cycling UK Stevenage are very concerned that a convenient and well-used link to the Old Town is going to be lost.

Full details of the Existing and Proposed Site Plans can be viewed on the Stevenage Borough Council website planning portal and searching for reference: 25/00884/FP The Planning Statement and the Proposed Car Park Amalgamation documents give written details of the proposals.

Cycling UK Stevenage will submit a formal objection but individuals can do the same on the link above.

An objection can be very short, for example - simply:

State that you use this route to cycle and object to its closure.

You could add:
  • How long you have used the route.
  • What journeys you use this route for.
  • Why the alternative route (up and down through the Aldi and Pets at Home access roads and the slope near the Tesco bridge) may be less convenient for you to use.
  • If a requirement to dismount and push your cycle is a particular problem for you.
