Icon Underpass Lighting Campaign
Since the original building was demolished, the lighting units in the underpass under the entrance to the Icon building have not been working.
We have now been been campaigning to both Hill and HCC for over 3 years. In October 2024 we put up a Halloween display - a big banner and 3 pumpkins - to point out that “dark underpasses are scary all the time, not just Halloween”.
In October 2025, this underpass was on the route for the Stevenage Glow Ride, one of over 60 rides across the country organised by Cycling UK to support their national "My Ride. Our Right" campaign. Communities across the country, lit up the night and called for safer streets and better cycling infrastructure, especially for women riding after dark. The Icon underpass is 10 seconds in from the start of the video here.
The ownership and responsibility for lighting has been the subject of much uncertainty. The lights did not appear on the Hertfordshire County Council assets mapping - as shown on information we collated in January 2025 here.
During June 2025, temporary motion sensitive LED lighting was installed - this video shows it in action.
But by November 2025, when hoarding was removed, the solar lighting was removed again.
In December 2025 Hill have promised to put up more motion sensitive lighting as soon as possible.
The Comet published an article about this campaign in December 2025 Charity's campaign to fix Stevenage underpass lights
