HCC Elections 2025 - Question 3 Responses

Question 3

To reach the cycleway network from most residential areas, people must cycle along high traffic roads with no cycling infrastructure. Many residents are genuinely afraid to use these local roads, and parents fear for their children's safety due to the speed of traffic. People of all ages shouldn't feel scared to cycle for everyday journeys.
What will you do to ensure that active travel can be for everyone, not just the brave?

One of the key issues in getting people cycling is to try to tackle speeding traffic. Yet one of the biggest barriers to doing this is HCC's own Speed Management Strategy which actually works to prevent changes being put in place to slow traffic. We would push for this strategy to be revised or abandoned as a matter of urgency and for HCC Highways to change its views on speed reduction. For instance, although 500 areas were identified in 2022 as potential 20 mph zones, just a handful have been delivered. This must change, given that slower speeds make roads safer for everyone including cyclists, reduce noise and air pollution and can even reduce car insurance premiums.
