Gresley Way Cycleway Campaign

The path alongside the road here is still for pedestrians only - the final 650m from Fairlands Way to Martins Way

Gresley Way is one of the busiest roads in Stevenage yet for many years the entire northern section from Six Hills Way to Martins Way lacked any cycleway provision. Instead, people cycling along this route were forced to share the road carriageway with vehicles travelling up to 40 miles per hour.
We are call on Hertfordshire County Council and Stevenage Borough Council to work together to upgrade the pedestrian path to give a safe high quality segregated space for walking and cycling.

We still campaign for the final 650 m from Fairlands Way to Martins Way!

Update - June 2025

The new infrastructure that now runs from the Emperors Head on Fairlands Way to the junction with Chells Way on Six Hills Way was used on the Midsummer Cycling for ALL event in June 2025. This was a 4-mile Celebration Ride with around 50 riders of all ages riding a variety of cycles. There were young children on their own bikes, toddlers carried on child seats, and riders using a cargo bike with a passenger and an adapted wheelchair. This shows the difference accessible infrastructure makes - we continue to campaign for the final 650m connection.

Update - November 2024

The Morrisons development did not go ahead, instead there is to be a logistics warehouse on Wedgewood Way.  We submitted a comment which included reference to the increased vehicles that would be generated on Gresley Way.  Jill spoke on behalf of Cycling UK to the planning committee when planning permission was granted - see article in The Comet here.  We will continue to campaign for the final 650m - the final link, connecting Fairlands Way to Martins Way and so Great Ashby.

Update - June 2023

As part of the Gresley Park East of Stevenage development, cycleway infrastructure is now being put in from Six Hills Way to the Emperors Head on Fairlands Way by the time the 75th home is built. This work is starting shortly.

Morrisons now have planning permission for a new supermarket store at Wedgewood Way off Martins Way.

Cycling UK highlighted the need for the Gresley Way cycleway in both a submission on the original proposals and at the final Planning Committee meeting on 25th May. See Comet and BBC articles.
To enable people who are working or shopping at the new store, it is essential that the final 650 m of cycleway between Fairlands Way and Martins Way is built.
This would be the final link, connecting Fairlands Way to Martins Way and so Great Ashby - please sign and share to get this crucial last section.
