The Heart of the Club
What exactly is a "Bimble"?
A "Bimble" is our core philosophy: a slow-paced, social ride that transforms the solitary act of riding into a collective, joyous, and supportive experience. We prioritize friendship and fun over speed or competition—we are proudly "high on coffee and cake, and low on endurance."
What is our General Riding Etiquette?
Our etiquette is centered on friendship and respectful behavior toward all path and road users. This is anchored by our ironclad "No-Drop" policy: we ensure no rider is ever left behind by moving at an accessible pace and regrouping naturally at checkpoints.
How fast and how long are the rides?
Slow and steady we go. Our club rides typically last between 2.5 to 3.5 hours, and this always includes a dedicated "sacred" break for coffee, cake, and conversation.
How much does membership cost?
To ensure our club is a low-barrier activity for the whole community, membership is entirely free for all founding members until December 31, 2026.
Can I join a club ride without joining the club first?
No; for insurance purposes as a Cycling UK affiliate, all regular participants must be members. However, we offer introductory guest rides so you can experience the "Bimble" spirit before committing.
On the Road
What equipment do I need?
We believe equipment should not be a barrier. Your "freedom machine" (bike) should be in safe working order. To ensure group safety and follow our 1909 heritage, we require:
- A bicycle bell for audible warnings
- A well-fitting helmet
- Bright clothing for visibility
What are the basic rules for group riding?
We prioritize safety through:
- Single File: We ride in single file on narrow roads or when busy traffic is present.
- Dismounting: We follow all local signage regarding dismounting.
- Shouts & Signals: We use standard Cycling UK guidance for hand signals and shouts like "HOLE" or "CAR BACK."
How do we interact with other road users and horses?
We lead by example through mutual respect. When meeting horses, be particularly careful: slow down to well below 10 mph, do not ring your bell or shout, and pass wide and slow (allowing at least 2 meters of space). Always follow the Highway Code.
What happens if I have a mechanical issue or a puncture?
Don't worry—you will never be left behind. More experienced members will always be on hand to help you with any complications or repairs.
Safety & Wellbeing
Is the club safe for my family?
Yes. We advocate for the "8 to 80" metric, meaning we believe our local infrastructure and club environment should be safe enough for an 8-year-old and an 80-year-old to cycle confidently to the shops or a cafe.
Who do I contact regarding safeguarding?
We are currently appointing a Safeguarding Officer. In the interim, the Club Chairperson (Guardian of the Ethos) is your primary contact for any concerns, which will be handled with sensitivity and confidentiality.
Should I carry safety information?
Yes. Absolutely. We recommend all members carry emergency contact details (ICE) and any relevant medical information on every ride.
