2026 Question 6 - Responses
Question
Requests for residential cycle hangars are often declined due to a perceived “lack of demand”, as the current system places the burden on individual applicants to find neighbours willing to share. There are only six hangars in Stevenage, with no budget reserved for more, meaning cycling is being suppressed by a lack of secure parking.
Will you commit to making the cycle hangar request process easier for residents in your ward, potentially by utilising your Councillor budget?
Conservative
I would be happy to consider such a request but I’m afraid I would require proof of sufficient demand. I am wary of agreeing to fund the installation new infrastructure if there is no evidence of demand as this is not prudent stewardship of taxpayers’ money.
Green
We are willing to utilise the councillor budget; however, given potential budget constraints, we will also explore alternative funding sources, such as grants. We plan to involve the community, identify optimal hangar sites in Stevenage, and recommend locations that encourage cycling, such as flat areas and those close to the town centre. Additionally, collecting data on cycling activity in Stevenage will support decisions about where to locate hangars and where they could help to promote cycling.

This will be in line with my encouragement for residents to cycle and making sure the infrastructure is in place to allow this. I would also look into whether my Councillor budget can be used to support additional cycle hangars in Roebuck, and will work with residents to identify suitable locations.
