2026 Question 1 - Responses

Question

Surface maintenance is consistently cited as the top barrier to cycling by our residents’ panel, causing discomfort and accessibility issues for many, including pregnant women and those with health conditions. While Hertfordshire County Council (HCC) maintains most routes, Stevenage Borough Council (SBC) is responsible for the north-south paths in Fairlands Valley Park.

Will you publicly support our campaign calling on both HCC and SBC to improve the maintenance of their respective cycle paths?

Conservative

Yes where we have cycling infrastructure it should be maintained to a proper standard for the safe enjoyment of local people.

Green

We will publicly support your campaign to improve the maintenance of cycle paths. Not only is it essential to maintain the paths to prolong their use, but poor maintenance can pose health risks and deter use of the paths. Stevenage is built on the heritage of a good cycle network, and we should take pride in ensuring it is “well kept”.
