Elections toolkit for cycle campaigners
Politicians, local and national, often don't realise just how popular measures to encourage active travel are.
Elections are a great time for all cycling advocates to call on decision-makers to step up, be bold, and create the safe streets and cycle routes we all need.
Engage with candidates
Speaking to your candidates is a great way to show them that all kinds of people care about cycling. You could take them for a bike ride around your area, or organise a hustings event to ask your candidates what they’ll do to give people better transport choices.
Spread the message
Local newspapers, radio stations and TV channels are hungry for polls-related news, so seize the moment for yours.
It’s a good opportunity to craft your own narrative about cycling and explain why decision-makers should support it, to counter some of the more negative angles.
Make your plan of action
It’s much easier to get things done if you can find other people to team up with and share the work. If you’re not sure where to start, here’s a good structure for some activities to start thinking about.
