Vote Bike: Liverpool City Region
Context:
The Liverpool City Region could be transformed by cycling. Currently, the region has some of the worst health rates and highest deprivation rates in the country. Child obesity in Liverpool is among the highest in England, as is physical inactivity in adults. The rate of incapacity benefit claimants for mental illness in Liverpool is the highest in the country.
Currently, only 2% of commuter trips in the Liverpool City Region are done by cycling. However, the region has the third highest propensity for cycling in the country under a Dutch scenario.
Cycling is perhaps the easiest form of exercise to fit into a daily routine as it is also a highly efficient and low cost form of transport. And creating Space for Cycling is a very easy and most low cost way to greatly improve the health and wealth of a place.

- Plan a strategic Liverpool City Region-wide network of safe cycle route
To significantly boost cycle use in the Liverpool City Region, the mayor should produce a costed plan for a high quality strategic and integrated network of safe cycle routes that is safe and practical for use by people of all ages - Seek the funding to build the network
Create a dedicated budget for cycling and actively seek enough funding to implement your costed plan - Work towards a highway system with zero fatalities or serious injuries in road traffic
Work with the Police and Crime Commissioner to crack down on dangerous driving and parking

Throughout my time as a City Councillor I have campaigned hard to improve conditions for cyclists in Liverpool. I understand that roughly £250m worth of road schemes are planned in Liverpool, yet the proportion of that which will be spent on cycling infrastructure will be far too small. I will show the ambition and commitment to secure funding to make Liverpool City Region a great place to cycle. I have unsuccessfully campaigned to get Liverpool City Council to adopt the target of zero deaths on the roads, in line with the aims of the Vision Zero campaign. I will reverse regressive policies that prevail in the city region which favour private motor vehicles over any other form of transport and give more space on roads to sustainable transport, including cycling. |
