At 81, Cycling UK member Mavis Paterson, known as Granny Mave, became the oldest woman to pedal from Land’s End to John o’ Groats. Now aged 85 she has just completed a 1,000-mile cycle ride around Scotland.

Only taking up cycling in her fifties she has taken on numerous fundraising cycle rides, for Macmillan Cancer Support in memory of her younger sister and her three children who sadly passed away within four years of one another. 

Cycling has helped Mave cope with the grief of losing her children she told the BBC that taking on challenges takes her mind off her pain; it is “like therapy”.
