Maureen joined Durham Breeze in 2019, looking for a non weight bearing sport after having a hip replacement in 2015. She hadn’t cycled since 1982, but through cycling she discovered new friends, inspirational women, a love of the outdoors and a renewed sense of purpose.
In 2022, Maureen became a Breeze Leader to give back what had been given to her. The following year, she was diagnosed with bladder cancer and underwent a total hysterectomy and bladder removal, resulting in a stoma. Remarkably, within three months she was back in her happy place - leading rides and encouraging other women to cycle.
Maureen has undertaken the London 100km Ride the Night for Women's Cancer in May 2024 and 25 to help raise awareness.
For Maureen, cycling is a great healer, both mentally and physically. It brings together nature, conversation and exercise in one beautiful experience. What could be better?
