Our Inclusive Cycling Experience (ICE) project's success at the CiTTi Awards

Our award-winning Inclusive Cycling Experience (ICE) project is transforming access to cycling for disabled people, proving that truly inclusive, sustainable transport is not only possible, but already changing lives

Cycling UK has proudly won the Transportation Education and Advocacy Award at the CiTTi Awards on 25 November 2025 for our Inclusive Cycling Experience (ICE) project, funded by the Motability Foundation. This recognition celebrates our commitment to sustainable and inclusive mobility through innovative outreach and community engagement.

ICE was designed to address a critical gap in provision: disabled people face significant barriers to cycling, despite many disabled people wanting to cycle for local journeys.

Our delivery approach combined short and long-term cycle loans with skills and confidence-building sessions, enabling participants to experience cycling in real-world conditions.

Between April 2024 and November 2025, we’ve delivered 554 cycle loans, hosted 1,766 attendees at sessions, and engaged 1,721 additional participants at events, reaching 4,041 people in total.

The impact of the project  has been transformative:

  • 63% would consider cycling as a mode of transport in the future.
  • 85% reported improved physical or mental wellbeing.
  • 82% gained increased access to places and opportunities.
  • 68% felt more confident cycling.

Our success was driven by tailored outreach, partnerships with local disability groups, and strong representation of diverse cycles and cyclists in our communications. Our social media campaigns achieved over 245,000 impressions and 11,000 clicks, amplifying our reach and allowing more people to see and take part in the project. ICE also convened a sector roundtable and engaged in policy advocacy to ensure systemic change.

This award validates the expertise and dedication of our delivery teams in Greater Manchester and Inverness, as well as those of our many partners, in creating life-changing opportunities for disabled people.

We want to thank everyone who has enabled the delivery of the programme, including our funders, the Motability Foundation; our programme partners, Wheels for Wellbeing; and our hub partners, The University of Salford, Manchester Bike Kitchen, Tameside Council, and the University of the Highlands and Islands in Inverness. We have also been supported by Velocity CIC inverness, and Wheels for All in Greater Manchester
