1.What is Strand 5: Cycle Parking and Storage?
This strand is to fund cycle parking and cycle storage facilities. You may use the funding to purchase facilities such as a secure shed, shelter or cycle rack; or for enhancements to existing facilities, such as shelves, hooks or additional racks.
We recognise that having access to a secure place to keep cycle will greatly improve the likelihood of them being used.
This fund can be used by organisations:
- To make their facilities more attractive to visitors on bikes
- To encourage more of their employees, students or residents to cycle
- To expand outputs or operations of cycle Repair or Recycling projects
- To offer storage for Shared Use cycling fleets
2. What can the grant be used for?
The purchase and/or enhancement of cycle parking or storage facilities. We have detailed guidance on choosing the most appropriate kind of solution.
A non-exhaustive list of eligible items includes:
- Cycle lockers
- Cycle sheds
- Cycle shelters
- Bike racks, such as Sheffield stands, or indoor racks
- Enhancements to existing storage, such as hooks, shelves, or additional racks
- Required groundworks, installation, and transportation costs associated with the purchase of parking or storage facilities.
We cannot fund; storage rental or repairs to storage; lighting; or contingency costs.
3. Is there a cap on the amount that can be applied for?
Yes, the advisory upper limit for applications is £5000.
If you think your project will require more than £5000, please contact the Cycle Access Fund team at [email protected] and we will be happy to discuss your options.
4. Can the Cycle Access Fund provide advice around the permissions required for planning or installation of Cycle Parking and Storage?
Each project will have different planning requirements, depending on who owns the land, your relationship with the landowner, the kind of storage or cycle parking that you wish to purchase, and a number of other factors.
The Cycle Access Fund team cannot support planning applications and we cannot give advice on the planning process or permissions.
We strongly recommend that you make enquiries about permissions and/or planning before beginning your Cycle Access Fund application.
During the application process you will be asked whether you have permissions for your project.
5. Is advice available on how to get started with a cycle parking/storage project?
If you need support choosing the right storage solution we have produced a storage buying guide3 to help you.
We recommend contacting the supplier or manufacturer of your storage solution and/or a local contractor; while you are still in the planning stage of your project. They will be able to provide you with specifics around groundworks and installation, so you will have a clear picture of any foundation preparation required, costs and timeframes before you make your application. We recommend that you use a local supplier and/or contractor wherever possible.
