A tribute to Jean Ashton
It is with great sadness I am reporting the death of Jean Ashton (formally Hook/Hairsine) aged 91. Jean was a member of the Cyclists’ Touring Club/Cycling UK for an incredible 75 years.
She was very much ‘old school’ and had toured extensively at home and abroad, raced (including against Beryl Burton) and cycled for everyday errands as well. In 1970 she was First Lady in the now defunct British Cycle Touring Competition (BCTC).
In 1980 Jean began leading CTC tours on the continent and in 2020 she was proud to be given a place on the roll of honour as one of Cycling UK’s 100 Women in Cycling.
Jean’s other passion in life was Girlguiding, and she was a member of the Trefoil Guild, an organisation for retired guiders to meet.
She will be greatly missed by friends, family and the wider cycling community.
