Wold Newton 8th February 2026
Cycling UK Louth Sunday ride to Wold Newton 8th February 2026
The latest weather forecast had improved our chances of enjoying a fine ride to Wold Newton with expectations of sunny intervals and a mild 9 to 11 Degrees Celsius.
Meeting up at Louth’s Meridian Leisure Centre were Tim Newbery back on the E-Crossfire (now fitted with a new torque sensor), Steve Croton, Alan Hockham, Paul Linder, Ty Harness and John Rickett. Chris Owen had messaged that he’d meet up en-route. With numbers eventually totalling seven, that would be our largest turnout of the year.
Following the prescribed route we’d soon pass by Saint Andrew’s Church in Utterby, signs advertising its 14th Annual Snowdrop Day. Hot refreshments were being served but we’d save ourselves for the legendary catering at Wold Newton.
National Snowdrop Day this year falling on February 8th, marks the arrival of the first signs of spring and honour these resilient, early-blooming winter flowers. Snowdrops symbolize hope, rebirth, and the end of winter. Hurrah.
Continuing with a tough climb up to the Boswell Top Road, Alan, John and Steve made it look easy. Here we chatted to some ladies who were commemorating the tragic loss of a family member and fellow cyclist. Flowers are often laid by the crossroads in remembrance.
Before long we’d meet up with Chris who having battled into a strong headwind, had already taken some photos of the abundance of snowdrops with splendid views by Scallows Hall Plantation and The Valley. Also, an abundance of walkers and cyclists heading to the Village Hall. Would there be any cake and hot soup available? No need to worry as John had dashed ahead and reserved seating for us all. Inside, tables were still laden with freshly baked goods and tasty homemade soup was in plentiful supply. Great to meet up with Brian Mann and other members of Lindsey Roads Cycling Club.
A return now with a climb at first up to Hawerby, affording fine views of the Humber Estuary with the sun increasingly breaking through the cloud. From here a descent through the Grainsby Estate and onto Grainsby Holme where Chris would depart for home.
Arrived back into Louth at 1.30 pm but with the Leisure Centre packed as it was hosting the County Championship Swimming Gala, some members went on to enjoy a final cuppa and flapjack back at Tim’s. About 35 miles for the Louth contingent and over 60 miles for Paul.
