Wold Newton 10th May 2026

Sunday 10th May 2026.

For some members it would be a day in Lincoln to witness the 70th edition of the Grand Prix. One of the oldest events in the UK racing calendar, the Lincoln Grand Prix men's race has been running continuously since 1956. For some great photos go over to Cycling UK Lincoln and Cycling UK Gainsborough Facebook Pages.

For other members, it would be a ride to East Ravendale for Blood Cancer UK's 27th running of the Grimsby Bikeathon. Most were attempting the 28 mile route which is notoriously hilly!

Tim Newbery had agreed to lead the third alternative, a leisure ride to the famous Tea Rooms at Wold Newton Village Hall.

Having enjoyed a fine warm and sunny day on the Saturday with temperatures up to around 20 Degrees Celsius, today in contrast would be decidedly chilly with a strong north easterly wind and a top temperature of only 11 degrees, well below the seasonal average. Tim had only taken cycling mitts so fingers were certainly cold whilst Chris had come prepared with warm winter mitts.

Never the less, meeting up with Tim at the Leisure Centre were Chris Owen (still trying to acclimatise to the vagaries of an English Spring) and Charlie Calderwood fresh from his travels abroad.

Heading into the strong headwind (gusts of 25-30 mph were recorded) it was a case of a steady push on the pedals through Brackenborough and then rather more exertion up past the Deserted Medieval Village at North Elkington. 400 ft AMSL and great views behind us all the way to the east coast.

Onwards to the Kelstern Stone of Remembrance, commemorating in particular the significant Australian (RAAF) personnel involvement in 625 Squadron (Lancaster) based at RAF Kelstern, before heading northbound to Swinhope. Fine views of Binbrook and right over to the radar dome at Claxby. Charlie had recently visited this classic golf ball.

From here we would meet up with increasing numbers of cyclists of all ages who were it would seem taking part in the Grimsby Bikeathon. Great to see so many very young riders who seemed undaunted with the task ahead.

Arrived at Wold Newton about 11.30 am with Chris skillfully securing a table in the hut. Great selections of cakes as per usual, Chris thoroughly enjoying a home made Fat Rascal.

Sitting and chatting over refreshment, we hadn't realised at how quickly the time was passing by as we were still encamped when Harvey, Ty, John and Alan turned up having completed the 28 mile event and were now on their way home. Well done guys. They would go on to clock up close to 60 miles on return to Louth. Thanks to Ty for the photo's.

For the Cycling UK Louth Club Ride contingent on the shorter Wold Newton Ride, we'd still clock up about 33 miles arriving back at 1.30 pm.
