Group of people riding

Cycling UK Louth’s Wednesday Wander to the Coast. 24th June 2026.
Ride Report: John Rickett…

You’d think it would be difficult to come up with an excuse not to ride on a day like today, however only Rob Cook and myself (John Rickett) were at the leisure centre this morning. With a forecast of 24C all day at Mablethorpe, it was quickly agreed that the coast was the region to head for.

Legbourne, the Carltons, Withern, Hagnaby and Sutton le Marsh were all ridden without raising a sweat! Along Roman Bank to the Boatshed at Huttoft Beach, it was just a bit on the nippy side however an outside table sheltered from the sea breeze was pleasant enough. Surprisingly, there were only a few there so service was instant.

The return was to be via Mablethorpe North End, retracing our steps as far as the Huttoft road we decided against going along the promenade in case it was sandy (not good for skinny tyres) however where the Colonnade now is we thought we’d give the prom a try. Right decision, it was mostly clear of sand, what bit there was being easily avoided; the many holiday makers needed a little more care to avoid. Good news really I suppose that there were so many people enjoying the walk and the beach in the now increasing temperature.

At the Beach Café we decided another coffee was in order, it’s not often that lingering on Mablethorpe prom is an enjoyable experience, today was one of those days.

On to Stain Lane, Withern and the Carltons once again and then through Grimoldby and South Cockerington, where we parted company – Rob to return to Louth and me headed for Fotherby. By now, back inland, it was warming up but not oppressively so.

51 miles for me, only a bit less for Rob, just think what the others missed.
