"Steady Saturday" Ride : Louth-Aby -Louth 23rd August 2025
A warm but overcast start at 10 a.m. saw us leaving Wood Lane, Louth, for a ride down to Aby Village Hall for coffee and cake. Today's group consisted of Ty, Tim, Mark, James, and Alison. We headed out through Hawker Drive into the newly extended housing estate where Lavendar Way now leads onto the Legbourne Road. We then turned off to Little Cawthorpe, with Tim opting to ride through the ford before passing the Splash pub. Next, we traveled through Muckton Bottom, Muckton, and up onto Megram's Top, before descending into Aby past the old Railway Tavern.
The village hall was open and already serving coffee and cake for just £2, with a choice of Victoria Sponge, Carrot Cake, or a school sponge cake with frosting, sprinkles and custard —all very delicious. Leaving Aby luckily the roadworks were passable by bike, so we were able to continue to Claythorpe Mill, which sadly closed earlier this year. Following the old railway we had a good chat with the new owners who are renovating the old railway station. We then rode onwards through Authorpe, passing fields consisting of sunflowers and phacelia (green manure.) We passed Castle Carlton, though we didn't have time to see the motte-and-bailey castle today, and continued through Great Carlton, Legbourne Furze, and Stewton before finally arriving back in Louth at a very leisurely pace, covering 22 miles.
