Saltfleetby 11th February 2026
Cycling UK Louth’s Wednesday Wander to Saltfleetby 11th February 2026
The weather forecast had been very discouraging for anyone wanting a fine sunny day. Rain had been forecast all day, albeit petering out in the afternoon. So, it was just Tim Newbery and John Rickett who turned up at Louth’s Meridian Leisure Centre, deciding to take refreshment at the Little Village Tea Shop regardless.
Not surprisingly, there were no sightings of any other intrepid cyclist on our journey, a route that would first take us over the lively waters of the Louth Navigation at Ticklepenny Lock.
Approaching Howdales the rain had almost stopped although there was a noticeable headwind that gave John a bit of a workout. We looked forward to hot drinks and something to eat at the former school, where we were well looked after and almost the only customers. The club is booked into the Little Village Tea Shop for its 40th Anniversary Lunch on Wednesday 29th April 2026. Full details will be published soon.
Soon after departure, John was pointing out the location of the former Saltfleetby Railway Station and where the line crossed the Main Road. The station was opened in 1877 when the Louth and East Coast Railway opened a line between Louth and Mablethorpe, later extended as part of the Mablethorpe Loop. Sadly, the station closed for good in 1960. We did however meet up with the line’s location again at The Gatehouse in Saltfleetby Saint Peter.
Through the Carltons now and to Legbourne Furze where skies were brightening and the sun starting to make an appearance. Indeed, on return to the Leisure Centre a little before 1 pm it was positively sunny, temperatures having risen to a very mild 11 Degrees Celsius. 25 miles for the Louth contingent.
