Old Town High Street Improvements Update

Work on the Old Town High Street improvements will begin at the end of September after the Charter Fair.

The work to be carried out includes updated proposals for the southern end of the High Street.

At the last consultation, carried out in Spring 2024, proposals included the removal of the roundabout at the southern end of the High Street. 

The High Street south of this point will now become one-way only with vehicles no longer allowed to proceed south. 

  • The pavement outside Holy Trinity Church will be widened and become a shared footway and cycleway as shown in yellow on the plan above.
  • There will be direct access to this from the cycleway at the south - as a cyclist comes up from the underpass, they will proceed directly across Letchmore Road between The Coach and Horses and Holy Trinity.
  • Additional shared footway and cycleway sections will enable cyclists going in either direction to proceed to or from the main High Street road carriageway there as shown on the plan below.
