Cycling UK Louth’s Wednesday Wander to The Vista at the Boatshed Huttoft Beach, 22nd July 2026...

Meeting up at Louth’s Meridian Leisure Centre were Tim Newbery, John Rickett and Rob Cook who had just returned from his camping holiday. Paul Linder had indicated that he’d be joining us enroute, perhaps at Withern.

Skies were overcast, the cloud thick enough to produce a few spots of slight rain but we were soon passing through Stewton and Legbourne in the cross wind or tailwind. 

Onwards through the Carlton’s and indeed, we found Paul waiting for us near Withern Village Hall. Passing by Strubby Airfield we saw a number of gliders being prepared for flight. One was already airborne but we wondered if conditions were suitable for any long distance flights.

Crossing over the Wold Grift Drain at Washdyke Bridge, the middle marsh and outmarsh lanes took us swiftly to The Fat Seagull Café where there’d be a choice of the promenade route to Huttoft Beach or the newly resurfaced coastal road. John and Paul made the decision for us with Roman Bank and Huttoft Bank providing a fine ride, noting the continued build of National Trust’s new café. Still some weeks away to be completed by the looks of it. 

Arrived at The Vista at the Boatshed on schedule at 11.45 am. Most visitors were keeping warm indoors as coastal weather stations confirmed temperatures just 16-17 Degrees Celsius. Chilly, especially for Rob who had been used to clear blue skies and hot sunshine with temperatures of 29 Degrees over the last few days. Never the less, hot beverages were enjoyed along with a mix of cheese scones and sausage baps. Rob consumed and apple, core and all.

Departing at 12.30 pm time for our homebound route, Steve Croton had assured us Sea Lane had been fully re-opened after months of roadworks. Indeed, it was a straightforward journey to Willow Garth along Lincolnshire County Council’s Cycle Route C4. Some would continue along C4’s Jolly Common Lane, and very jolly it was too. Others would take an alternative route, although workmen at the Axe and Cleaver Huttoft, had indicated that we weren’t too far apart.

Stopping briefly in Alford, Paul would head directly home whilst others turned down the opportunity of final refreshment to continue back to Louth and Fotherby. Nearing Belleau, Tim and Rob encountered a familiar cyclist approaching from the opposite direction. Ty Harness! who was heading for work. 

Pleasantries exchanged and after a bit of a chat there were just a few more hills at Meagram and Muckton before the final stretch via Little Cawthorpe.

Tim and Rob arrived back into Louth at 1.45 pm with John also arriving home at 1.45 pm. Perfectly synchronised. 42 miles for the Louth contingent. By now sunshine was slowly breaking through the cloud with a more respectable 20 Degrees being recorded. Many thanks to all.
