Farmer Brown's 28-01-2026
Cycling UK Louth’s Wednesday Wander to Farmer Brown’s Ice Cream Parlour 28th January 2026.
Tim’s previous ride to Farmer Brown’s Ice Cream Parlour was way back on 26th January 2025, directly following on from Storm Herminia which was named by the Spanish weather service. This year, the ride was directly following on from Storm Chandra named by the European agency. Luckily the day was set to be increasingly sunny and relatively mild with light winds, early cloud preventing any ice in Louth, unlike further south.
John Rickett met up with Tim Newbery at Louth’s Leisure Centre whilst Steve Croton and Paul Linder had indicated they’d meet up en route or at Farmer Brown’s. ETA back to Louth about 2 pm.
With Tim Leading the way, we were soon passing through Manby and the Carlton’s. A short stop at Withern for a lookout for Steve, although he’d greet us a mile or two up the road at Woodthorpe. Paul appeared soon after, the quartet now benefiting from increasingly sunny skies and an enjoyable ride was had along the back lanes over the Boy Grift Drain to Farmer Brown’s. The ditches and dykes were water laden but loads still safely contained. We’ll soon see if the famous weather lore “February Fill Dyke” holds true; "February fill the dyke, Be it black or be it white”.
Farmer Brown’s proffered fine refreshment and is undergoing a makeover. Plenty of time too for a chat of forthcoming ventures in the Spring and Summer.
A return home for both Steve and Paul as we progressed through Saleby and Devil’s Square (Paul had tea cake making duties to perform) leaving Tim and John to continue to Claythorpe, Muckton and Little Cawthorpe. A south easterly back wind aided our muscular efforts and with the sunshine having lifted temperatures to eight Degrees Celsius it felt surprisingly warm. 37 miles covered by the Louth Contingent.
