Cycle access confirmed for new Lidl Store

Cycle access to the cycle parking at the new Lidl on Maxwell Road is now confirmed.

On the original plans, there was no clear access for people cycling to reach the cycle parking racks outside the store entrance without needed to dismount and push their cycle.

Cycling UK Stevenage Campaigns campaigned for this to be changed.

  • We met online with the developers and outlined our concerns.
  • We submitted a formal objection to the Planning Application here
  • We spoke at the Planning Committee meeting on 2nd December. The Comet report of that meeting is here.

At the meeting, Lidl developers announced that  works now propose a parallel (Tiger) cycle crossing adjacent to the proposed Zebra crossing, located just past the new vehicle access to the site. This tiger crossing will allow cyclists to cross the road without dismounting and continue to proceed directly to the cycle parking outside the store entrance as shown by the green line in the picture above.

We had also raised concerns about the accessibly of the ramp access from Gunnelswood Road. Councillors on the Planning Committee discussed this and a Planning Condition for the developer to confirm the gradients of the ramp was passed by the meeting before the committee voted to grant planning permission.
