Baumber Walled Gardens 05-10-2025
Cycling UK Louth Sunday Ride to Baumber Walled Gardens 5th October 2025
Ride Report: John Rickett.
A better ride than expected, says it all really. The forecast was for a chilly start, rising to only 14 C and with wind gusts of about 40 mph. It was indeed chilly to begin with but with the sun out, conditions quickly improved and the wind didn’t seem to be much of an obstacle either.
Ty Harness, Alan Hockham. Steve Croton and john Rickett were the takers today for an 0930 am start, with Tim walking to the leisure centre to make sure all the little charges were on their best behaviour and knew where they were going for his planned route.
The destination was Baumber Walled Gardens via Hallington, Donington on Bain, Benniworth, Panton and Minting. In the drying winds the overnight wet roads had resumed summer like conditions and hardly a puddle was encountered, that is until we reached the short gravel track up to the Walled Garden café, here it was a bit soggy and slippery, but that was all for the whole trip.
The day was pleasant enough for sitting outside, soaking up the sunshine and replenishing lost energy from the climb over the Wolds.
The return route had us passing though Hemingby, climbing the drag which is Green Lane to Goulceby and then (I’m sure because Tim knew he didn’t have to ride it) up Red Hill to the Bluestone Heath Road. We all made it, slowly, but there is a suspicion Alan may have switched on the electric assist as he was at the top first.
