Safety Matters

There are a few useful points to think about before joining the bike bus – some of these are good to discuss with your children in advance also.

Before the Bike Bus
Make sure to check your bikes the day before – check your tire pressures, make sure your brakes are effective, look at derailleur alignment (no rattling/ rubbing noise!), make sure there are no loose components and so on. For Winter buses, fit bike lights (and check the batteries are ok).

During the Bike Bus
Adults should try to ride at the outside edge of the group (close to the centre line) – this helps to keep us together and everyone safe.

Always stay on the left hand side of the road. We can use the full width of our lane on that side, but stay out of the opposite lane and ask children to make sure that there is always an adult to their right.

Take great care around parked cars. These can move, doors can open and wing mirrors are at head height for a lot of our participants! Please stay well clear of them on the ride.

Don’t ride out ahead of the marshals at the front of the group. This is partly about safety and partly because it tends to cause an increase in speed, which makes it harder to keep the group together.

We’ll be stopping along the way to regroup and to let other people join in, so watch out for those pauses in progress.

Have lights switched on for bike buses in the Winter months.

However, the main thing is… Enjoy the Ride!
