2026 Question 3 - Responses
Question
The ongoing regeneration of the town centre will increase the local population and the need for safe travel routes to and from local shops and homes. It also brings funding opportunities from developers. The residents’ panel notes that people struggle to navigate the town centre conveniently while cycling and therefore are less able to contribute to its local economy.
Do you support investment into safe cycling routes in and to the town centre using developer funds?
Conservative
We are fortunate to have a town where there is already an abundance of safe cycling routes. I am of course keen to see developer funds used to improve local infrastructure for the betterment of all residents, be they cyclists, pedestrians, motorists or users of public transport.
Green
Developer funds should be fairly allocated to all parts of Stevenage in need. We would strongly support allocating funds to safer routes and cycle storage for the New Town. It's important to plan ahead for expected population growth from new builds and the strain this will put on services. Making it easier and more convenient to cycle into town will relieve pressure and encourage a sustainable modal shift.

Yes, although I cannot yet agree on how developer funds will be used, I support and agree that cycling needs to be a huge consideration in and around our town.
