2026 Question 2 - Responses

Question

Currently, broken glass in Stevenage is only cleared during scheduled maintenance four times a year, leading to frequent punctures for cyclists. Resident panel members mention they frequently have punctures, up to 5 times per year in their household. Similarly, delayed leaf clearance creates hazardous conditions on cycleways throughout the autumn. Conversely, when residents report broken glass on the streets in Cambridge, the response aim is 2 hours.

Will you commit to working with SBC to improve response times for clearing broken glass and to ensure timely leaf removal in autumn?

Conservative

Yes, when I was previously a councillor for Longmeadow & Bragbury End I worked with SBC officers to get leaves and other rubbish removed from cycle tracks, footpaths and roads alike. The council must do better to meet its obligation to provide a clean and tidy town.

Green

We will commit to supporting quicker response times, clearing glass, and addressing hazardous conditions caused by leaf litter. Again, glass deters the use of paths due to the risks of injury and tyre damage, while leaf litter can also obstruct paths during flooding, causing slip hazards and issues for those using mobility aids, pushchairs, or shopping trolleys. If other councils can respond more quickly, why can't Stevenage?

Reform UK

As someone who is already advocating the clean up of our town from the unorganised mess Labour have constantly left it in, yes I will make sure to push for delegation and/or a team who deals with this directly keeping our town (including cycleways) constantly clean and most importantly, safe.
