2024 Question 3 - Responses

Stevenage Borough Council introduced cycle hangers in 2021 but so far only 3 have been installed. Will you commit to ensuring that at least one hanger is installed in each ward across the town over the next 12 months?

Conservative

Yes.

Green

We would be looking to make the council more proactive in identifying sites for cycle hangars. We cannot promise to get one installed in every ward but would certainly be pressing for them to be located where there is an identified need. We would also publicise these far more widely, especially to people living in flats and homes without garages.

Labour

We appreciate that this has not exactly taken off, notwithstanding our support in principle. We agree with Cycling UK Stevenage that promoting cycle hangers in appropriate places in each ward should be taken up with ward members, with a view to using local budgets and other funding sources we can explore together. We will look to do ward walkabouts as part of the street planning that is part of our climate change action plan to start this coming year.

Liberal Democrat

Yes we do support the installation of dedicated cycle hangars where the need is shown with the ambition to install hangers in each ward across the Town. The locations for these should be found in consultation with residents and seek to provide cycle parking facilities in areas where secure storage isn't available such as Flat blocks without cycle storage. Liberal Democrats have a strong history of using their discretionary Local Community Budgets to make transport safety improvements to our wards whether that’s through Speed Indicator Devices or through investing in additional zebra crossings.
