Ride for Sam Boulton

Campaigning event

Event description

Sam Boulton was tragically killed in 2016 when the passenger in a parked private hire vehicle, Mandy Chapple, opened the offside rear door, knocking Sam off his bike and into the path of a Citroen van.

It was the day of his 26th birthday.

Every year, a ride is led by Sam’s family in his memory, and to highlight the dangers of car-dooring.

Following his death, Sam’s family set up the Sam Says campaign to educate drivers about safely opening their car-doors and call for changes to the law to tackle this dangerous behaviour. The family were integral to securing changes to the Highway Code to include guidance on the ‘Dutch Reach’ – a safe method of opening car doors – and have played a huge role in making our roads safer for everyone who cycles.

Cycling UK continues to campaign for a change in the law to review the belittling penalty for ‘car-dooring’.

If you’re able to join the ride at 6pm on Saturday 29th July, starting at the Curve theatre, please support Sam’s family and the fight for safer roads by joining the ride.
