Travellers’ tales: An interesting potter by bike

We were listening to the radio when up popped a piece about the singer Nick Cave’s exhibition of a series of ceramics called ‘The devil – a life’. As it was in Holland, it sounded like a good excuse for a short cycling adventure.
Two weeks later we were on the ferry from Hull to Rotterdam. The first 10km from the ferry is through the largest port in Europe. This might sound daunting but there are cycle tracks right from the ferry.
After passing what appear to be the gates of Mordor at the boundary of the port, the cycle routes continue throughout the Netherlands, anywhere you go. A short, cycle-friendly ferry ride across the Nieuwe Waterweg takes you to the historic, canal-crossed town of Maassluis.
We stopped off at our favourite canal-side café, Monsieur Paul. Fully fuelled up, we rode up the coast. A wide tarmac cycle track slices through the sand-duned shoreline and carries on further north.
But for us it finished at our hotel door in Scheveningen. This gave us access to Voorlinden Museum to see the exhibit. We also had the beach and the attractions of the Hague in easy reach.
What an amazing trip!
