Robina Ljaz

Refugee bike mechanic

Robi attended the Bike Project in 2020 for a donated bike. At the time, she was an asylum seeker, unable to work and living on only £35 per week. The Bike Project taught her to ride and gave her a bike.

Robi has volunteered as a mechanic in the Bike Project workshops fixing bikes for other refugees, and she has supported the charity by bravely sharing her story to help raise awareness of the issues refugees face.

Despite struggling with the debilitating pain of arthritis- which sometimes leaves her unable to walk without a stick- Robi started volunteering at Pedal Power Sessions, giving over 100 hours of her time to the programme and supporting refugee women to learn to cycle. She says that when she is helping others, the pain 'goes away for a bit'. She is inspiring for so many.

“We think Robi is amazing – truly inspirational.”
